The holidays are a time for family and friends to come together and celebrate. But if you have a family member with limited mobility, making your home accessible can be a challenge. Here are a few tips to help make your home more accessible for the holidays:

Entrance

  • If your home has steps, consider installing a ramp. There are a variety of ramp options, including portable ramps that can be easily installed and removed.
  • Make sure your doorway is wide enough to accommodate a wheelchair. If it is not, you may need to widen the doorway or install sliding doors.
  • Remove any obstacles from the pathway to your front door, such as rugs, planters, or toys.

Kitchen

  • If your kitchen counters are too high, consider installing a height-adjustable countertop or a countertop extender.
  • Make sure your kitchen sink is accessible by installing a wheelchair-accessible sink faucet and levers.
  • Install pull-out shelves and drawers in your cabinets to make it easier to reach items.
  • Remove any clutter from the kitchen floor to create a clear and safe path for wheelchairs and walkers.

Bathroom

  • Install a grab bar in the bathtub or shower to help your family members get in and out safely.
  • Install a raised toilet seat with grab bars.
  • Make sure the bathroom doorway is wide enough to accommodate a wheelchair.
  • Remove any obstacles from the bathroom floor, such as rugs or hampers.

Other tips

  • Make sure all electrical cords are tucked away to prevent tripping hazards.
  • Install grab bars in other areas of your home, such as hallways and stairwells.
  • Keep all walkways clear and clutter-free.
  • Provide comfortable seating with armrests for people with limited mobility.
  • Consider purchasing or renting a wheelchair or walker for your family member to use during their visit, or when they visit if they come more often.
